When you hear about mold and mildew, they're often lumped together. Cleaners are labeled mold AND mildew and you associate them both with your bathroom. They do have their similarities; however, mold and mildew are pretty different and can impact you and your home in their own ways. Here is your guide to mold and mildew, their similarities and differences, and what seeing them means for you.

What are Mold and Mildew?

mold remediation

Molds are types of fungus that can grow anywhere there is organic matter and moisture. This can happen in your walls due to bad pipes, your ceiling from roof leaks, or in your bathroom from the humidity of your shower. It can appear fuzzy or slimy in a variety of colors such as black or green. Mold is an irritant and can cause allergic reactions and asthma attacks. It has a very strong, musty odor and spreads quickly.

mildew

Mildew is a grey-white powdery fungus that is typically found on damp surfaces such as a shower curtain. Mildew is superficial so it does not penetrate deeper into the surface it grows on. Mildew can also cause some respiratory problems but they tend to be less severe than the issues that arise with mold.

Why is it important to know the difference?

Correctly identifying mold and mildew is important for health implications, clean-up, and prevention. Mold can have more severe effects on your health than mildew and hides more easily, so you should be more conscious of the signs. Mildew can be cleaned using over-the-counter cleaners in most stores, while mold is more serious and should be cleaned professionally. Finally, keeping a space ventilated and clean can prevent mildew, while preventing mold can include checking pipes and humidity control.
